Location
Ano Archanes is one of the most important examples of an anthropogenic ensemble of Eastern Crete that combines an extensive historical depth with a coherent and active present-day productive and social structure. The stratigraphy of the times is reflected in various ways in the recent settlement physiognomy of the area and among the buildings one can discover relics of the Minoan period as their foundations in many cases have been made on ancient or later fragments.
The geographical area of the wider area of the settlement is the centre of a long-lasting archaeological search as it gathers evidence that reveals the long range of its uninterrupted occupation from ancient times until modern times. The archaeological sites at Juktas, Fourni, Anemospilia, Vathipetro located in the wider area and the palatial building at Turkogeitonia in the centre of the settlement, are important landmarks of a profound journey that makes Archanes one of the most interesting historical units of Crete.
